My latest work focuses on the integration of metal and fiber as well as "sculptural" paintings (see Paintings page). The Fiber wall art comes as canvas mounted "Color Totems" or round metal and fiber "Fiber Fountains". A fuller description of each of these follows below:
Color Totem Sculptures:
These sculptures are available in several different sizes and are positioned on a separate, black steel stand for stability. Current sizes are 30" by 5" (desktop size) and 40" by 8" although custom sizes are also available upon request.
Each totem is highly detailed and woven tightly (with both fiber and wire) for maximum durability and the woven wire provides additional strength to each totem. The woven wire also provides sufficient additional strength to add a slight curvature to these sculptures.
Built on hollow, colored dowels, totems are surprisingly lightweight but well grounded on their solid steel stands. Unlike traditional weavings, color totems are rigid although they convey the typical warmth and texture of standard weavings.
Like all the color totems, these sculptures are available in an extensive array of color palettes to choose from and were specifically designed to be custom built to reflect the owner's color preferences and personality.
The fibers used in each of these sculptures are of the highest quality and strength. Many of the fibers used are imported and/or hand dyed and short of the primary concern of durability, fibers are next chosen for their sheer beauty. Silk, cotton, cashmere, chenille and various fiber blends are just some of the sumptuous fibers used.
Wires are all tarnish free and include silver, copper and multiple colored wires in a luscious array. The majority of these wires are enamel coated with a copper underlay, providing both the strength and beauty that only real metal can provide.
How To Use Color Totems:
Canvas Mounted Color
Color Totems are often best used in two ways: either singly to fill a long, blank wall space or they can be used in multiples to create a vignette or collage for larger wall spaces. I do offer free in home consultations locally to design custom color totems or fiber fountains to address specific wall and client needs. Below are examples of how you might use color totems on your own walls:
Color Totems can be grouped with different totems collaged together or as seen below with duplicate totems stacked on top of one another. If used horizontally, as below, totems can also be staggered for an interesting wall ensemble.
Waves Wall Art
"Waves" wall art pieces are different than Color Totems in that they're wider, mounted on canvas and well, woven waves in fiber and wire. They're meant to, more or less, tell little stories about movement of all manner, gently flowing along in waves of textural color.
"Waves", like all my weavings, are intricately woven and come in different color palettes and sizes.
These pieces of wall art are made of hollow aluminum or copper tubing woven tightly (with exotic, often hand dyed fibers) together to create a simple but stunning wall statement.
Fiber fountains are purposefully long and narrow for dramatic effect. They are specifically meant to be customized and/or commissioned to fit into a particular space in your home and created in exactly the right color palette to coordinate with your color preferences.
The fiber fountain to the left measures approximatly 16" x slightly over 4 feet. Custom ordered fiber fountains can be made in smaller or larger sizes to suit your own interior.
